Korea University has carried out a sustainable 'Campustown' project in Seoul, which used bottom-up participatory urban planning to integrate the university campus within the local community. The participatory process of workshops and stakeholder engagement identified over 30 indicators of what constituted successful campus-community engagement, including support for start-ups, housing, community cultural festivals, environmental sustainability and the development of resident-based cultural programs and content. The most important indicators led to tangible project and initiative outcomes for university and community members; such as the opening of a cultural hub for improved community relations. This hub has been used for engaging and interactive activities such as community-theater based approaches to engage students and residents.
