Institutional Approach

Sunway University, Malaysia, is an example of a green campus built from the ground-up. The university sits within Sunway City, which is a sustainable university-city complex built in the remains of rehabilitated mining land. The university is owned and operated by a Philanthropic foundation (a non-profit, private university), and was established with a mission of creating a sustainable urban university complex. Sunway formally incorporated the SDGs into their mission and strategy in 2016, to serve as a 'second operating system' in its governance structure. This is guided by the 'Campus with a Conscience Team'; which together with the educational center for sustainable development (Jeffry Sachs Center on Sustainable Development), the SDG academy, and the sustainability office implements sustainability projects and acts as a regional educational hub for sustainable development.
