The University of Cape Town is home to the African Climate Development Initiative (ACDI), a university-wide collaborative research and training center for climate action. The ACDI coordinates research together with partners from various institutes across the African continent on just transitions and capacity building for climate change and development challenges. For example, together with the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (University of Ghana) in West Africa, and the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (University of Nairobi), the center conducts transdisciplinary research and societal engagement around transforming inequalities through climate action; building community resilience; and forming alternative energy pathways and sustainable urban settlements. The center also offers a variety of interdisciplinary educational programs, such as a Masters in Climate change and Development; Environment, Society and Sustainability; and Southern Urbanisation.
