Institutional Approach

The University of Melbourne has adopted a mission of fostering meaningful student engagement in their learning experience, under the umbrella of Education for Sustainable Development. In this line, they innovated a Sustainability Learning Experience Database (SLED), a ‘supra-faculty’ learning program which aims to prioritize and encourage experiential learning amongst students across multiple disciplines, and to encourage students to develop critical reflexive skills in their sustainability education. As part of this mandate, they center work-integrated learning (WIL) for students from all disciplines, which provides internships for undergraduate and postgraduate students with a focus on facilitating connections between students and local communities, and bridging the gap between academia and employment. Alongside these educational initiatives, the University of Melbourne has a comprehensive and ambitious sustainability framework incorporating a broad view of just, sustainable transitions, as well as circular campus efforts such as biodiversity, greenhouse gas inventorization and reduction, and waste audits.
