Institutional Approach

The Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands has incorporated living labs into a broad portion of their educational curriculum. Specific living labs educational initiatives and associated applied research centers include the Water Application Center, the Food Technology Hall and the Dairy Campus. The university’s focus is on food and agriculture, and they aim to facilitate green entrepreneurship amongst graduates. This is supported by a center that coaches graduates on the transition from their studies towards successful sustainable businesses and initiatives. Researchers from Van Hall Larenstein are also engaged in thought leadership around structuring educational living labs around the SDGs, and leveraging the transformative capacity of living labs to address issues of sustainable development beyond technological and climate-centered approaches, including justice and equality considerations.
