Aalborg systemically embeds education for sustainable development and transdisciplinarity as an institutional educational focus . The university uses a unique educational model called the 'Aalborg model for problem-based learning', which is applied to interdisciplinary sustainability 'mega-projects', which involve a large number of students across all disciplines working together on common sustainability themes. For example, the project Blue Denmark concerning biodiversity in coastal 'energy islands' involved students across Environment Sciences, Computer Technology and Applied Philosophy.
