Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria runs several innovative societal-facing approaches to sustainable development. The university's 'Theater for Development' center has used theater and ritual practices to conduct community theater educational programs on the themes of sustainable development and local engagement in policy, such as corruption in the oil industry in the Niger Delta. This approach entails university staff who are engaged in the theater project taking up residence in target communities and ensuring greater community involvement in the entire process of planning and carrying out the theater events: from data collection through to analysis, discussion, scenario development, rehearsals, performance and post-performance discussion.
