Institutional Approach

The University of Antwerp, who’s motto is ‘walk your talk’, sets out a multi-pillared research, education and engagement sustainability approach, with the aim of being a fossil-free and biodiverse university. Second- and third-year undergraduate students can follow a number of interdisciplinary ‘basket courses’ on sustainability. Near-term goals for climate neutrality and fossil-free operations are supported by the UAntwerp Climate Team, a coalition of staff and students working in thematic working groups; as well as the Greenoffice, a student platform to motivate and implement climate-friendly initiatives on campus. Specifically, the Design Sciences Hub of the university employs innovative problem-based learning and teaching methods to integrate sustainability into Engineering and Design curricula. They have developed an EcoDesign in Higher Education (EHE)-toolkit to support teaching staff. The toolkit includes a guide, a set of cards on EcoDesign themes, learning content, teaching methods, examples from practice, and templates that can be used in educational activities as a starting point for interactive sessions.
