Institutional Approach

The Eden Hall Campus at Chatham University is one of the first new university campuses in the world to be built sustainably from “below the ground up”. While the campus has only existed since 2017, it is intended to function as a circular living lab, embedded in the local community. The campus features full cycle water recycling, net positive energy production and zero waste operations, and ultimately functions as an experiment based on the expectation that students will be empowered to engage in various parts of the circular campus in a living lab manner. Grade-school students visit the campus for sustainability enrichment education in the educational gardens and biodiversity enrichment areas.
