Simon Fraser University's approach to sustainability covers various aspects, notably embeding into the local environment and community through it's 'UniverCity' initiative. Together with other investors, the university has funded this initiative with the aim of integrating the university into a sustainable, multi-purpose community, which maintains or improves the level of biodiversity and natural resources present in the mountainous-forest setting. All new buildings must meet the 'Living Building Challenge' - net energy producing buildings which capture and recycle more water than they use, built from non-toxic, sustainable materials. In addition to an ambitious climate action plan focused on climate justice for surrounding communities, Simon Fraser runs a continuing education program for sustainability, the Climate Action Certificate, a part-time online program for individuals outside of the university community. The certificate focuses on indigenous perspectives and issues surrounding climate change, as well as developing leadership capacities.
